Field of Dreams
I’ve been thinking about that movie….field of dreams I think its called…its been years since I have seen it, but yesterday that image of the ball field in the corn field and the catch phrase, “build it and they will come.” That’s how I have been feeling lately…wondering if they will come when the doors to finally open. Wondering how they (my community) will respond. And I’m thinking…it’s time to head down to Skip and Lisa’s place again and get a shot of inspiration!
Okay, so this is my first post on the blog since its inception. I have been a bit absent from the board the past few months. If it any conciliation I have written many times in my head.
So where have I been? In my field of dreams…
In March I made my first visit to Portland, to Working Class Acupuncture, for a workshop on Community Acupuncture. I’m wearing my t-shirt as I write. This morning my daughter, remembering my trip when she saw my t-shirt, asked me, “why did I have go away to that place?” I said because Dad’s need to get away and do fun stuff from time-to-time. Of course I feel instantly in love with Lisa and Skip and the whole gang at WCA, not to mention the whole concept of Community Acupuncture.
CA was something I had dreamed about for years, and here it was beautifully displayed – for real! I left that conference determined to create my own version.
Two months later my wife found the perfect spot just 4 blocks from our house, an old grocery store. We took possession in June. Since then I have been tearing apart and building back a beautiful dream. We unearthed a slightly weathered old-growth fir floor that had been covered with plywood, linoleum, carpet, and paint. This week I am putting the trim on – the icing on the cake.
We have a named our space hemma, which is Swedish for home. We plan to have both a yoga studio – both of us have been teaching for years, and a community acupuncture clinic.
The place has become such a part of me I am little nervous to open her up to the public…like showing your baby to everyone after those first few precious weeks hold up at home. I hope everyone in my community will share in our vision and embrace what we wish to offer.
A few days ago, as I was contemplating all this, I was riding my bike home from my current office. There was a man curled in an abandoned recliner chair on the side of the street. He looked so peaceful, the warm glow of the autumn sunlight shining upon him. I decided that was a good omen, and that it was time for me to start collecting some recliners of my own.
Come and visit.

Re: Field of Dreams
Hello Michael,
I live at the Cook Street end of May Street. I run past Hemma almost everyday hoping that today will be the day I see the "Come-on-in-We're-open" sign!
You have built and I WILL come!
I can't wait!

Korben- I think if we had clinic exchange programs everyone would want to go to Victoria first! Way to go Michael!

Re: Field of Dreams
Welcome Michael,
It is amazing how often that line from that movie has floated into my mind as I also work to get my clinic started...It is such a leap of faith..this rather huge space soon to be filled with slumbering pin cushions!!
But it is true that you have to be able to see it in your head and heart first..your hemma , your home..this place that will be other peoples extension of home....a place where they can sort of wander down to the kitchen at midnight for a metaphorical mug of warm milk , when they cant sleep.
I would love to be an acupuncturist-in -residence in BC sometime in the future..or Philly ...or...!!
Re: Field of Dreams
Congratulations. :) Nice web site. Reminds me of a well illustrated children's book, evoking magic and peace. I look forward to a visit sometime in the near future.
Re: Field of Dreams
Michael,
What a great name for your CAP - can't wait to come and visit.
Best of Luck to you both.
Re: Field of Dreams
Oh man! CA in BC. I'm coming as soon as I can.
Thanks for your evocative post and the love you're putting into the clinic. They're coming for sure.
I have a fantasy that at some point we'll all have this down enough that different practitioners could work in each other's clinics. It would be like an acupuncturist in residence. It's my fantasy, so I'm going to imagine doing community acupuncture in Victoria on an old-growth fir floor.
Anyway, congrats. And, what an auspicious time to open up.

Grattis på ny Hemma! Hoppas att det are den storsta framgångssaga av alla CAs! Också hoppas att jag kan hälsa på någon gång.
