philadelphia freedom

I quit my "day job" today! Whoo hoo!

And by day job, I mean as an acupuncturist. My dirty little secret is that I have been working since December for an MD acupuncturist a couple of mornings a week. He bills worker's comp and PI upwards of $300 per treatment (as long as e-stim was involved - and he makes sure it is), and paid me $25 per patient (and that's after I insisted on more money). I go in for a couple of hours and if we're busy walk out a couple of hundred dollars less in debt. The big dirty system.

It was at his office that I realized I could treat more than one patient per hour, easily, in fact three patients an hour was no problem. And it was then that I remembered the little red book my friend Bill had told me about and revisited the WCA site to find that a book had been published (The Remedy). Ordered it, read it, joined CAN, found business partner, opened community acupuncture clinic two weeks ago, and now, quit day job! Did I mention the two year old who is constantly yelling at me to picky her uppy?? I impress myself sometimes.

Seriously though, it's all a cause for celebration. PCA is finally up and running and I went from one private patient to about 25 new patients in two weeks. On Sunday Korben and I saw 18 patients, our busiest day yet. We have been averaging about 10 a day, I think. And while some of those days everyone's been a little grumpy and I have played that bad game of being too attached to results, in general, I walk around that place pinching myself. This is my job and I love it.

And there is one thing I know for sure: If I were to take Ms. Felice Dunas's advice and start charging more than any practitioner I know, all of those patients, and my one remaining job, would disappear way faster than I can say money=qi.

Re: philadelphia freedom

Ellen, that's awesome!!
Not just for you, but for all my old neighbors who get to benefit from your treatments. This news makes me happy.

Re: philadelphia freedom

Thanks everybody!
51 patients last week (and that's with Korben taking a day off on Friday)!

And, have I mentioned how much I LOVE the online scheduling thing? I don't know how we could go on without it. Of course, I am even more addicted to checking my email every ten minutes, what with all of those new patient appt. emails I keep getting.

Glad to hear you talked to Peter, Jordan - I hope he was able to be of some help.
-Ellen

Re: philadelphia freedom

Oohhhh I love it...the CAN connections continue. L.Ac.s, patients, etc. will all be talking before we know it...thousands and thousands.
Not only is it a great thing, this community acupuncture, but it can be a great job too, eh?
Congrats Ellen - looking forward to sending a motley crew your way in November.

Re: philadelphia freedom

Congratulations on your new beginning Ellen. New frontiers will bring new challenges, and then, inevitably, you will get comfortable (I am noticing this in my own less than one year old CA clinic), and that will inspire you to again seek fresh new horizons, ever pushing the envelope.

By the way, I did speak with your brother Peter out here a few days ago. He and I are friends that go back about 15 years or so. He seems interested in what we CAN-nerds are doing within our area of the healing professions.

Re: philadelphia freedom

Congratulations on quitting your day job! I was also a part of that system. The Chiropractors I worked for thought I could save their business when the system started to cut their payments. It didn't work, they went out of business. I learned the important lesson that depending on a third party for payment is a bad idea, the payments can disappear at any time.

I now view the experience as a gift. Treating a large number of patients in a group setting paved the way for my interest in CA. Group treatments are effective and so much fun! I never want to go back to private treatments and the endless talking.

I'm happy for you that you have one job and you love it.
