Re: And Now, a Few Words from Our Sponsor
I love the term "collective healing" I often think our insistence that individual therapies are better is a part of our "collective pathology."
Re: And Now, a Few Words from Our Sponsor
I was talking to a friend who is a psychologist yesterday, sharing a bit about community healing. He told me that it is already well documented that group psychotherapy is more effective than individual therapy. The problem is getting people to use the model. I suspect that in acupuncture, we face a similar bias. But first caregivers need to offer the model, then we can collectively work on the biases and fears.

Thanks for the plug, Lisa! Speaking as healthcare reformer, what I think the CAN community needs to remember is that community acupuncture makes a sterling case for the effectiveness and viability of group-oriented healthcare, which I enjoy calling "collective healing". Whether we're talking about acupuncture, mind/body exercises, yoga therapy or what have you, collective healing is more financially accessible, is community-building, and cultivates chi on a group level.
I urge all acupuncturists out there to reach out to the caregivers you know in other disciplines and challenge them to explore and establish similar group-oriented approaches that work within their respective modalities.
Envision a society where most healing happens in groups--now wouldn't that be a healthier place?

wow
Re: And Now, a Few Words from Our Sponsor
Yeah, the hospital that houses the integrative health center is 20 minutes from me. My concern is that I won't really be respected because I don't even have my own CA clinic yet. I do have group treatment experience though, so I'm probably just being a wimp. Bad me! I've even met the staff acupuncturist. She invited me for a tour of the center awhile ago, I guess it's time for me to giver her a call.

Brightshen -- am I mistaken, or are the Henry Ford studies happening in your neck of the woods? I think you may have nominated yourself for this outreach opportunity -- I second the nomination!
Re: And Now, a Few Words from Our Sponsor
Based on what I read about the Henry Ford studies, acupuncture was only used one on one and the results were not very good compared to the group treatments. The group treatments involved guided imagery and somatic movement therapy. I didn't read that there were any plans to include group acupuncture in further studies. I don't know if the research director is familiar with, or interested in community acupuncture, but this may be a good outreach opportunity.
