Welcome to CAN's Locate-a-Clinic! The following is a list of all CAN members who have full time Community Acupuncture (CA) clinics. They feature group treatment spaces (no private acupuncture treatments), a sliding scale somewhere between $15 and 40 with no greater than a $15 surcharge for the initial treatment. If a flat rate is charged, it's $30 or less. No proof of income is required or requested. Herbal consults are charged at the same rates as the community acupuncture rates above. Terms of Usage: This contact information is published for the purposes of locating an acupuncturist for personal use. Any other use of this information, including general solicitation, is expressly prohibited.

*The fee structure that the LOC adheres to takes into consideration the needs of both the patients and practitioners. Knowing that many conditions require ongoing regular treatments we keep the low end of our sliding scale low enough for minimum wage earners to afford to get treatment weekly for an open period of time. At the same time practitioners need to earn enough money to pay their bills and keep their clinic open. The $15 low end of the sliding scale is a good compromise. Clinics can afford to stay open if everyone paid $15 per treatment while if the minimum were higher (say $20) many minimum wage earners (baristas, bike mechanics, hotel staff, or even senior citizens on a fixed income, etc.) would not be able to afford to come regularly.

The top end of the sliding scale- $40 - is set to keep the patients on a roughly equal basis with each other. If the top end was higher , there would be a dynamic of patients at the high end subsidizing or giving charity to the patients at the low end -- and charity is not consistent with the principles of Community Acupuncture. Community Acupuncture is about community -- supporting equitable relationships -- rather than encouraging top-down relationships.

The extra initial paperwork fee of no greater than $15 recognizes the need of the practitioners to spend more time orientating new patients to the clinic. In real terms patients make appointments which means that the practitioner (or receptionist) puts their name in a slot at a certain time. Usually that time is a 10 or 15 minute window so that the flow of the clinic doesn’t become too chaotic. New patients usually need two slots to orient and treat them the first time and thus the up to $15 first visit paperwork fee reflects the extra slot used by the practitioner to cover their extra efforts for them.

Thus the scale that a patient might pay for a first visit is up to $30 at the low end and up to $55 if they are paying the high end.

Some clinics find the sliding scale too complicated and instead charge a flat fee. To be on LOC we require that flat fee be at the most $30, with an first time fee being a maximum of $55. Clinics that charge a flat fee may well have a lower fee than $30 as that rate excludes many lower income patients who could provide the bulk of the acupuncturist's income.

One final thing. No clinic on LOC asks for income verification of any kind. We have no idea of the details of patients’ lives that allow them to afford one fee and not another and we don’t think the patients should have to share such info. Often higher income patients have commensurately higher vital expenses and so we believe that anyone should be allowed to pay what they can within the sliding scale.
